The townhouse at Number 10 Half Moon Street
had been built in 1730. More than a century later, Robert Fleming opened
this elegant establishment as the Flemings Hotel in 1851, the year of
the Great Exhibition in the Crystal Palace, when the world was admiring
the finest craftsmanship of the Victorian age. Robert Fleming wanted his townhouse to reflect the style and status of the great country houses of England. Under his direction the house became a warm and hospitable establishment ideally placed for the glamour and society of the West End. After a fine dinner, his guests would promenade on the stylish Piccadilly and admire the lake in Green Park at the end of Half Moon Street. |
